Why Choose A Spider Platform
A spider lift is typically a compact tracked access platform with an articulated boom and deployable stabilisers. Its transport dimensions can make it useful for restricted entrances and courtyards. Commercial applications can include internal maintenance, work beside older buildings and access through routes that rule out a larger wheeled machine.
A narrow travelling width does not mean the platform works in the same narrow footprint. Stabiliser deployment, boom movement and emergency access all need room. Treat the entrance measurement as the first check, then assess the working position independently before deciding that a spider lift will fit.
Getting Through The Building
Measure every pinch point on the proposed route, including gateposts, turns, door furniture and changes in floor level. Confirm whether quoted machine dimensions depend on removable or folding components, and whether any adjustment is permitted by the manufacturer. Access should be assessed with the machine in its actual transport configuration.
Internal routes also need a floor-loading check. Track-mounted equipment still applies load to the supporting surface and may need suitable protection for vulnerable finishes. Where the lift must pass through an occupied building, agree the movement window and separation from staff, visitors or deliveries.
Ground Support And Stabiliser Space
Provide details of paving, buried services, basements, drains and any recent excavations near the proposed feet. Stabiliser pads spread load but do not make unknown ground safe by themselves. A competent assessment needs the machine’s outrigger reactions and reliable information about the supporting ground or structure.
The IPAF ground conditions guide explains assessment and spreader-pad selection. If the necessary information is unavailable, resolve that gap before booking. Do not place a stabiliser over a cover simply because the surface appears flush with the surrounding paving.
Preparing A Useful Hire Enquiry
Start with photographs from the unloading point to the final working position. Add the narrowest width, lowest clearance, turning restrictions and the point of work. Explain whether the lift will operate inside, outside or move between both environments during the same contract.
Next, confirm height, outreach, basket loading and the proposed hire dates. Discuss power supply and ventilation for the chosen machine, rather than assuming a tracked platform is automatically suitable indoors. If an operator is required, include the task schedule and any induction requirements.
Before delivery, agree an unloading point and a controlled route through the premises. At handover, check documentation and arrange machine familiarisation. Keep the stabiliser area protected during the job and follow the agreed stowing and collection procedure when the work is complete.
The Safety Plan For A Spider Lift
The Work at Height Regulations 2005 apply to the work activity, while PUWER 1998 and LOLER 1998 address the equipment and relevant lifting duties. A rescue plan needs to account for the restricted position where the lift may be operating. Check that a trained person can still reach ground-level emergency controls.
Include weather exposure, electrical hazards, overhead trapping and falling tools in the task assessment. A compact machine can still create a large exclusion area once raised. The working envelope, stabiliser configuration and permitted slopes must come from the proposed machine’s instructions rather than a general description of spider lifts.
What Affects Spider Lift Hire Cost
Spider lift quotations depend on the reach required, transport arrangements, power configuration and hire duration. A difficult route may call for a site visit or specialist delivery planning. Operator attendance and floor-protection requirements can also change the scope and should be agreed before the hire starts.
Compare the total job requirement rather than entrance width alone. A machine that passes the doorway but cannot deploy safely will not solve the access problem. If the route and working area are open, a conventional boom lift may be another option worth assessing.
Spider Lift Hire Questions
Can A Spider Lift Go Through A Narrow Doorway?
Spider lift access through a narrow doorway depends on the exact machine’s stowed dimensions and the complete route beyond the opening. Measure clear width and height, plus any tight turn immediately inside. Passing through the doorway is separate from having enough room to deploy stabilisers and operate safely at the final position.
Can A Spider Lift Work On Paving?
Spider lift use on paving requires an assessment of the surface and what supports it. The key information includes outrigger loads, ground-bearing capacity and any voids, services or covers below the feet. Suitable spreader pads may be needed, but they cannot replace reliable information about the ground or supporting structure.
