Where A Scissor Lift Fits
A scissor lift raises a guarded platform mainly vertically above its chassis. It is often a useful choice for overhead work where the machine can stand directly below the task. Facilities teams and contractors use this type of platform for lighting replacement, mechanical services, stock-area maintenance and internal fit-outs.
The larger deck can provide practical space for tools and materials, subject to the rated capacity. It does not give the same up-and-over movement as an articulated boom. If a conveyor, fixed counter or permanent plant prevents direct access below the work, consider a boom lift instead.
Electric Or Rough-Terrain Equipment
An electric slab scissor can be suitable for firm, level indoor floors where local exhaust emissions would be a concern. Check the actual machine’s permitted use, wheel specification and charging requirements. The label “electric” does not mean that every model is suitable for every indoor route or outdoor task.
Rough-terrain scissors may suit appropriate external surfaces, but their name is not permission to work on soft or unstable ground. Outdoor use depends on the model’s rating and its operating limits. Genie’s dual-zone guidance explains why indoor and outdoor ratings can differ.
Check The Entire Route
Measure doorways, loading entrances, corridor turns and the lowest overhead obstruction along the travel route. Include the machine’s stowed height and any manufacturer-approved guardrail folding procedure when checking clearance. A lift that fits inside the work area may still be unable to reach it.
Confirm floor capacity with the person responsible for the building, particularly on suspended floors or mezzanines. Total machine weight and local wheel loads both matter. Mention floor finishes, thresholds and ramps so the proposed equipment can be assessed against the whole journey from unloading to the working position.
Organising Your Scissor Lift Hire
Send the Liverpool site postcode, task, work height and expected hire period. Describe whether the work takes place indoors, outdoors or across both environments. List the number of people and the weight of tools or installation materials that must be carried on the deck.
Before booking, check delivery access, unloading space and the hours when the premises can accept the machine. Confirm a suitable charging point if a battery model is proposed. Ask about battery endurance for the intended duty cycle rather than assuming a fully charged machine will cover any shift.
At handover, review the instructions and equipment records with the responsible person. Complete the relevant pre-use checks, identify emergency lowering controls and keep access to them clear. Arrange a secure parking position and a documented off-hire request when the work is complete.
Safe Use In Occupied Buildings
Scissor lift use needs to fit the work at height risk assessment, including overhead trapping and people walking below the platform. Separate the work area from warehouse vehicles and public routes. Avoid moving loads across the guardrails or using the platform as a support for equipment outside its intended use.
The Work at Height Regulations 2005, PUWER 1998 and LOLER 1998 are relevant to planning, equipment suitability and lifting safety. Read HSE’s MEWP guidance before developing the site method statement. Operator competence and machine familiarisation are separate from simply receiving a delivered lift.
Comparing Scissor Lift Quotations
Scissor lift hire cost changes with platform size, working height, drive type and hire duration. Transport and collection can be significant parts of a short hire. Restricted delivery hours, specialist tyres and any cleaning or charging conditions should be stated in the quote.
Ask what happens if the work overruns and when off-hire becomes effective. Where a building has several levels, explain how the machine will move between them before requesting a price. This avoids pricing an unsuitable platform and then losing time arranging a replacement.
Scissor Lift Hire Questions
Can An Electric Scissor Lift Be Used Outside?
Electric scissor lift use outside depends on the individual model’s outdoor rating and operating instructions. Some machines have different permitted heights or occupancy limits for indoor and outdoor work. Tell us about wind exposure, surface conditions and the intended working position so those restrictions can be checked before a hire is agreed.
Will A Scissor Lift Damage The Floor?
Scissor lift suitability for a finished floor depends on its wheel type, weight, point loads and the floor construction. Non-marking tyres do not remove the need to assess loading or surface protection. Share the floor specification and any building-management restrictions before booking, particularly where the work involves a suspended slab or a sensitive finish.
